Fake artifacts still tell a story, expressed through the drama of stage and backstage, facade and structure. This generates unique narratives, depending on the vantage point of the viewer. As such, new vantage points can reveal unseen narratives, previously understood as mundane. _G_A_X_1_ modifies the viewers position with regard to the backstage of the work, postulating new uses of ornament mainly by radicalizing it's content. _G_A_X_1_ is formed by the lavish impulse of Victorian fixtures. However, the content and specific aesthetic experience of each object is a complete departure from historicism. One could say that a historic decorative impulse is utilized as the sub-structure to a new decorative language.
Chandeliers/Lanterns: gravity, dripping, canopy.
Hedges/Screens: decadent, overgrown, incredibly intwined
Ghosts/Video Games: figurines, superstitious pastime.
Molding: mundane, cargo.
Dining Table: defines the nature of the site, aligns the viewer with the installation.
These historical references slice my work into full size icons. My chandeliers present archetypal information, in absence of function. The reversal of hierarchy between function and meaning creates a variant of the narrative in which meaning is the product of the objects. The Stealth Molding I have presented is without a wall, without a building. Erasing any trace of rationality, leaving behind a landscape of floating ornament, it foretells the reversal of modernism. | |||||

By positioning the chandeliers with respect to the Dining Table form, familiar architectural proportions are invoked, and the space becomes defined by object relationships. Having made and exhibited these pieces individually, I am very eager to create an installation in which they can be understood as a complete narrative. This as an essential step in the progression of my work. My intention is for _G_A_X_1_ to be understood as a single piece. It will be visually complex, and at the same time, edited down to raw essentials. The way in which the installation is entered and experienced by the audience is an essential conversation. Interchangeability in the components of _G_A_X_1_ will allow for physical adjustments in situ, bringing the gypsy aesthetic of adjustability and portability as a counterpoint to the heavy architectural layout. | |||||
